Bears on the Beach – Waskesiu Playground Renewal
Within the heart of Waskesiu, at the townsite's main beach, a giant ‘tree’ and life-sized sculpture of a playful mother bear and her cubs will soon provide climbing opportunities for children as part of a new nature-themed playground. The tree and bears are part of the "Bears on the Beach" playground renewal project lead by the Waskesiu Foundation Inc. with Parks Canada as a proud partner. Upon completion in the spring of 2015, the new structures will allow more children to play at one time, combine physical activity and learning, while also encouraging children to appreciate Prince Albert National Park and the boreal forest setting.
The playground renewal project is a community-based endeavour – and it needs your support. The new playground supports the Waskesiu visioning exercise and complements Parks Canada’s proposed recapitalization and upgrade of the Nature Centre, the pathway from the Nature Centre to the playground, and plans to enhance the multi-use trails in and around the townsite.
The Waskesiu Foundation Inc. is a registered Canadian charity that supports recreational, social, cultural and environmental activities that enhance the Waskesiu experience for both residents and visitors. With help of community partners and donors, who have contributed over $1.2 million since 1999, the Waskesiu Foundation has successfully completed many community projects including 100 memorial benches, the Waskesiu disc golf course, townsite reforestation, tennis court re-surfacing, camp kitchen upgrades and construction, and Community Hall and Terrace Gardens renovations. Thanks to broad community support for the Waskesiu Foundation, a key stakeholder group recently noted, ‘…the Foundation makes Waskesiu better for all of us and has sure made our community something to be proud of’.
